Whenever I become part of a new group of people, I find myself telling the same few essential stories that give them a little picture of where I'm coming from. How I met Joey/why I moved to Canada. What I did on 9/11/01 (particularly comes up at this time of year). How I ended up at Wellesley. And how pretty it is to fly over the States at night on the Fourth of July.
It's always interesting which ones come out. There are a few I would like to tell sometime, but they're not for everyone. I know a person or two who might appreciate the time that my old boyfriend pretended to kidnap me in the airport so I wouldn't leave; luckily the security guards were preoccupied. Or perhaps that party in Claflin (ahem J.) back in school where I think real life started, even though college was almost over. Or maybe I'll start telling the story of how the living room ceiling in Brighton (only one of my apartments in Brighton had a living room) caved in on me more often. It's amusing and yet entirely inoffensive. I was too busy trying to bail out to even curse. Tuesday, August 29

Sorry I didn't blog yesterday. Busy day.
I couldn't believe it, so much so that Joey had to tell me it was real, when Saturday I was channel-surfing, and there was Debbie Allen, and it was Fame. MuchMoreMusic was having a four-hour marathon, and during such, they advertised that they would be playing an episode every weeknight at ten. I get to watch Fame. Any weeknight. You have to understand that this was the show. My favorite thing. During some very formative years, otherwise known as the mid-eighties. Had it not been for Fame, I probably still would have done lots of theatre things but quite likely not as many. I developed crushes on half the cast. I learned all kinds of things, some of which were true, about performing, and New York, and all manner of other stuff. I could write lots more but I have to go to work. Maybe later. Friday, August 25

I refer to this. Jason, whom I've never met but have read for a long time, asks why, if Plan B is now available without prescription, regular oral contraceptives aren't. Now, I may not know everything about this, but having been on them for years, I know a good bit. Plan B is a decent-sized dose of hormones in a very short period of time. Oral contraceptives, however, are generally small doses taken over long periods of time. Years. And since you are changing your own hormonal balance when you take them, side effects can get nasty, and it's a bad idea to take them without seeing a doctor yearly - to make sure your liver is functioning correctly, your blood pressure hasn't gone through the roof, and other things. Abnormal Paps aren't, AFAIK, a consequence of the hormones, but they can certainly be a consequence of sex without condoms, which often follows one's being put on oral contraceptives, and those need to be watched carefully if they occur. So I can understand why OC's are prescription-based - you really don't want to be on them without a doctor's supervision. But the one-time dose shouldn't cause you trouble beyond cramping and nausea, which are well worth it in this case. It gets out of your system pretty fast. I'm not a doctor, of course. But I do a lot of research to make sure I know as much as possible about what's going on in my body.

I can't really let a couple of news items go by without mentioning them. First of all, Pluto is no longer a planet. This is disturbing to me - I'm sure it's like people used to think of "New Math" - kids who are starting school now are going to grow up with Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and...NOTHING. Heh. But seriously, there will be a disconnect there between generations. G'night, John-boy. I mean, Pluto. But this is the big one: the FDA will now allow women over 18 to purchase Plan B without a prescription. That is huge, exciting, and basically astonishing considering the current climate regarding all things uterus in the States. Plan B is not abortion, it is contraception, and while other hormonal contraceptives do require prescription (for some good reasons and some stupid ones), the entire point of Plan B (taking it as soon as it is needed) is defeated by needing a prescription. This is a huge victory in reproductive rights. Wahoo! Let's see how long it lasts. Thursday, August 24

Red Sox ad on my blog. Coooool.
The game was amusing, particularly since I was rooting for neither team. We stayed until Maria had to be elsewhere, which was about a third of the game, and it turns out that five of the six runs had already been scored at that time. The Jays got smushed. Smushed. Joey returns this afternoon, yay! And there are rumblings in the career arena. Once some decisions are made, I'll write about it. Give me a week or two. Have a nice day. Tuesday, August 22

I've never been to a professional baseball game that was not a Sox game.
Tomorrow, I'm going to the Jays vs. A's game. Will be different, as I won't root for either. But the seats are quite nice and Maria is joining me, and we'll have beer and some fun. I wonder if they sell peanuts like at Fenway. For awhile, when my stomach was really bad, they were the only food item sold in the bleachers that I could eat, so I developed an affection for them. Joey is fine, by the way, just got off the phone with him. However, he hasn't had a Guinness yet. |
